My Top Writing Tips

by Inglath Cooper

  1. My favorite platform for writing and publishing my books? Why? On Pressbooks, I can create .mobi, .epub and .pdf files, edit them whenever I wish so that it is easy to correct a file and re-upload it if a mistake is discovered after publication.
  2. Try recording a first draft instead of writing it. Benefits? Dialogue tends to sound more natural. The story is more likely to move at a faster pace. With an app on your phone, you can record snippets of the story throughout your day. While driving to work, picking the kids up from school, etc. Try the app iTalk in the iTunes store.
  3. Consider hiring out the typing of the draft once you’ve recorded it. You can also have the typist transcribe the story in chunks as you go along rather than all at one time. is a good source for this kind of assistance.
  4. Set a word quota for yourself each day. This particular tip goes against my creative brain’s desire not to follow maps, recipes, and to-do lists. However, I have proven to myself time and time again that setting a daily quota, one that is not setting me up to fail but is reasonable enough for me to achieve with what I know to be a typical day for me.
  5. Read constantly. This is something I think most writers do anyway, just because we love it so much. But there are so many wonderful books to choose from. When one of those books deeply resonates with you, see if you can make a list of the reasons why. What particular things did the writer do to make the story memorable? I think when we become conscious of those things, it helps us to be aware of the experience we hope to give our own readers.
  6. Keep a journal. Young writers can really develop their voice by journaling. The relaxed way in which we jot down our thoughts and observations from the day can bring out our natural writing style and help hone our writer’s fingerprint: our voice.

Ever thought a dream might pass you by?

But when Gertrude ends up on the side of I-40 in flames, Nashville has never seemed farther away. Help arrives in the form of two Georgia football players headed for the Nashvilledream as well. When Holden Ashford and Thomas Franklin stop to offer CeCe and Hank Junior a ride, fate may just give a nod to serendipity and meant to be. Because while CeCe is chasing after her dream, she might find love as well.
