Waiting on Wednesday: The Shadow Queen by CJ Redwine

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday’s is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine where we get to talk about the books we are pining over that we don’t get to get our grimy little hands on for a while. I don’t participate in this meme weekly, but I’ve been wanting to talk about this book for a while. It’s one of my most anticipated reads for 2016!

It’s a dark fairytale retelling of Snow White that sounds completely amazing and is already garnering tons of buzz. When I checked last night on Edelweiss, it was the top most buzzed about unreleased book over the last 60 days (that’s everything: adult, YA, fiction, non-fiction) and it doesn’t even come out until the end of February!

I happen to pretty much love every telling of Snow White I’ve come across, but the murmurs on this one are that it is ten notches above everything else! And from what I’ve read of CJ’s writing from her other series, The Courier’s Daughter Trilogy (Defiance), I’m not at all surprised!

So I knew about this book a little bit earlier than some people. Full disclosure: I might be part of a private writing group with CJ online. I was still shocked and blown away when I saw this gorgeous cover pop up online and had to ask her if it was for real and final, and she confirmed excitedly that yes it really was! That is when you get really thrilled for the people in your writing group, when things like that come together for them and you know a great book is going to get the attention it deserves! That said, no… I have not read the book, in any shape or form and no, this has nothing to do with why I am so excited about this book. I would be just as excited about this book if it was being written by someone I had never heard of before and had a cover that wasn’t quite so awesome!

So I know, I know… enough about me… let’s hear about the book, Bex. You got it.

About the Book

Title: The Shadow Queen (Ravenspire #1)
Author: CJ Redwine
Publisher: Balzer + Bray (Haper Collins Publishers)
Release Date: February 23, 2016

A dark epic fantasy inspired by the tale of Snow White, from C. J. Redwine, the author of the Defiance series. Perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses and Cinder.

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in common—magic. She’ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.

In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kol’s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magic of his own—and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsman—and bring her Lorelai’s heart.

But Lorelai is nothing like Kol expected—beautiful, fierce, and unstoppable—and despite dark magic, Lorelai is drawn in by the passionate and troubled king. Fighting to stay one step ahead of the dragon huntsman—who she likes far more than she should—Lorelai does everything in her power to ruin the wicked queen. But Irina isn’t going down without a fight, and her final move may cost the princess the one thing she still has left to lose.

Why I’m Waiting on This Book:

It’s Snow White in a more complicated world! It’s a bit darker. A lot more complex. And this time the queen isn’t the only one with magic! I love the idea that Lorelai has magic as well as the queen, that they have this thing that makes them the same in a way. I also love the huntsman angle, though we’ve seen it explored a little bit, not quite in this way and to this extent and I think it’s just going to be so delicious to see it all unfold! I’m really glad this is a series too, because it means there’s going to be lots of wonderful twists and turns along the way before things settle down and everything is not going to go quite how we might be expecting so I’m just ready to hold on for the ride.

There’s no official book trailer released yet, but The YA Book Traveler made this pretty awesome fan one, check it out, subscribe to her channel, then add the book to your Goodreads list or pre-order above:

And PLEASE let me know what you thought in the comments below!! I must have someone to fangirl over this book with! Also, What are you Waiting on this Wednesday? Leave you Links in the Comments!

P.S. Again, I almost forgot to gush over that to die for cover! Gush. Gush. Gush. Gush. Gush. This is the jackpot of covers people. This is pretty much cover perfection right here.
